As a Die Cut 3M Tape Factory, let's explain the bonding process of 3M VHB tape.

1. Surface cleaning

1) The surface of the adherend should be dry, clean, free from rust, oxidation, grease, dust and other contaminants. 3M recommends the use of IPA/distilled water (50/50) as a general purpose surface cleaner.

2) For heavily contaminated surfaces, clean with other solvents and then clean with isopropyl alcohol.

3) Cleaning wipes and wipes must be replaced frequently to avoid secondary contamination of the cleaned surface.

2. Surface grinding

1) For the bonding surface, the following effects can be obtained:

Remove heavy oil and metal oxide layers;

To some extent, improve the adhesion of the tape to the bonding surface;

Improve the flatness of the bonding surface, thereby facilitating the infiltration of the adhesive tape to the bonding surface and improving the bonding of the plastic.

2) Grind with precision sandpaper to ensure that the surface has only small scratches.

3) After grinding, clean the surface with IPA/distilled water (50/50).

3. Primer use

The use of a primer can effectively improve the initial tack and final tack of the tape, especially for plastics and some spray/low surface energy surfaces.

The primer coating should be thin and uniform.

After the primer is applied, it should be thoroughly dried (>5 minutes at room temperature) before tape bonding.

Two: tape attached

First, the VHB White Acrylic Foam Tape is pasted on the surface of the adherend; the contact of the curling hand is left in the adhesive surface and left behind. It is attached while being pressed from the starting point.

After the attachment is completed, the release paper is removed, and the other adherend is bonded to the rubber surface, and the bonding is performed under pressure (>100 kPa).

Appropriately increasing the sticking pressure can increase the wetting of the surface to adhere, and at the same time effectively eliminate the air bubbles.

If the precise alignment is required, the release paper can be picked up with a “small tail” and the release paper can be removed after positioning.

Acrylic Foam VHB Double Side Tape is not suitable for operation at too low a temperature because the initial tack of the tape is poor.

The specific construction personnel should pay attention to keep the hands clean and free of oil during operation, otherwise, the final bonding strength will be affected.

Ensure that the operating environment is clean and free of dust.

VHB takes about 30 minutes at room temperature to reach 50% of the maximum bond strength, 72 hours to reach the final strength, and if the temperature is low, this time may be longer. In order to avoid cementation damage, there should be sufficient curing time before moving or using to ensure the safety of the joint.
